Windowless Bathroom Ideas

Windowless Bathroom Ideas - 1 - Showers Direct

So your bathroom has no windows and it’s looking more like a dark, dingey cave rather than your very own at home sanctuary. Well not to worry! We are here to win you over and detail all the ways in which you can bring new life into this room. Your bathroom might not have the natural light it takes for a fresh and airy space but there is a variety of ways to make it cosy and inviting and keep mould far far away.

How to make the most of a Windowless Bathroom

Surprisingly there is many design styles and choices you can make with windowless bathrooms which is a big positive. However, it does require a little more food for thought so don’t feel overwhelmed or discouraged. Take this as an opportunity to think about what you need out of this space.

#1 Mirror, Mirror!

When lacking natural sources of light – we have to fake it. That is why adding in mirrors will help bounce light from your walls and add necessary brightness to the space.

#2 Extractor Fan up to Scratch

Extractor fans aren’t the most exciting feature on display but they are certainly a must! An up to date extractor fan will keep moisture levels controlled and ultimately prevent mould and damp from taking over.

If you notice your extractor fan is starting to yellow in colour or you notice no difference in condensation levels it may be time to replace yours. (An extractor fan typically has a lifespan of 10 years). This will make a huge difference to how you utilise the space and keep it clean and maintained for much longer.

#3 The Power of a new Shower

A new shower can make the world of difference to your bathroom. You can even opt to do away with your shower screen for a more open concept or replace it with an interesting glass as pictured below. A new shower with better pressure and easy to use settings will make your space more enjoyable and relaxing. Choose a shower with an overhead deluge or built-in look for a more sleek and luxurious style. You can even go as far as to choose a different shower colour like matt black or warm brushed nickel.

#4 White and Bright

A popular go to choice for many, when you want to add brightness and lots of light to your space. It combats the lack of natural light coming through. White is a great way to make a space feel bigger, clean and modern with lots of various shade options. However, the downside is going to white can have the opposite effect and having fixtures and floor to ceiling white can make the space overly clinical and cold. You can counter-act this by adding natural fibres and elements; plants, linen, wood tones, even a marble effect or subtle pattern to break up the plain white will make the space feel more warm and inviting.

#5 Wallpaper

Wallpaper is a deeply under estimated hack to add interest to a dark corner of your home. The dark corner in this case, a windowless bathroom. Go classic and traditional or vibrant and fun like the references below. Wallpapering is versatile and gives you lots of options to make your bathroom an enjoyable space in your home.

#6 Dark and Delightful

You might be inclined to think windowless bathrooms should remain white to make the space feel brighter and yes white can definitely do this. However, if that’s not your thing then you will be happy to hear painting your windowless wonder a dark moody colour like; black, grey, forest green or deep purple/red is definitely a brilliant option! So paint until your heart’s content. Lean into the dark and moody and still achieve a cosy, relaxing space. Perfect to unwind in the bath or indulge in a nice shower.

#7 Clashing Patterns

Don’t be afraid to go bold with colour and vibrant patterns. Eclectic or bohemian styles can add so much interest you won’t even remember there is no window. Play with fun patterns, floor tiles, paint colours, lamp shades, curtains, ornaments and decorative pictures. This will make your bathroom feel unique and full of life.

#8 Let there be Light

When your only source of lighting is artificial you need to be strategic about the type of lighting you’re using. Choose any ceiling light you fancy, make it a focal point but choose cool toned bulbs to get the most out of the space. Warm bulbs will create more ambience but will not be as practical all day long. Use led lights embedded in your mirror and wall sconces for lovely decoration and extra brightness. Place them in areas with the least amount of coverage. (Tip: Use wireless re-chargeable lamps they come in a variety of shapes, textures and styles not to mention they are easily transportable.)

#9 Draw Attention

In the same vain as going bold and bright with your bathroom design. Making your shower area or bath a focal point with a dramatic finish will draw your eye towards that particular area. So while you can keep the rest of your space minimal, make your bath or shower the statement of the room. You can do this by adding a contrasting paint colour, a fun tile, unique shapes or adding unusual accents.
