Common Electric Shower Problems + Fixes

Common Electric Shower Problems + Fixes - 1 - Showers Direct

Electric showers bring instant hot water for easy showering. They are available in many different colour options and shapes. The choice is broad when it comes to electric showers. However, like most things they’re not without fault from time to time and things can go wrong. We examine some of the most common problems with electric showers and how to solve them.

Common electric shower problems

Electric shower keeps cutting out or going hot and cold?

If your shower is going hot and cold, it’s usually because not enough water is getting to the shower. Your best option is to check that the valves are open. Check the one coming into your house and the valve on the line to the shower. If they are both fully open, then it could be a problem with your showers flow valve inside the shower. The valve will need replaced if this appears to be the case.

Water in an electric shower is suddenly freezing cold?

If your shower is running cold, the thermal cut-out could be the cause, this occurs if the shower overheats or the power to the elements is cut off. If your shower is slightly overheating it will cut it off and reset. However, if this keeps happening, or indeed the shower gets far too hot, it cuts out completely then it will need replaced.

Shower is dripping water

This could be from a faulty flow or solenoid valve. Try to locate the source of the leak, it’s likely a part will need replacing. You may be able to do this yourself or if unsure make sure to contact your plumber.

No water coming from the shower at all

This is the most common issue with electric showers – the solenoid valve. If your shower cuts off or stops working completely. The solenoid valve is the root cause in which the coil breaks down. The purpose of the coil (when working correctly) is to lift a plunger inside the solenoid valve and allow water into the shower. When the coil breaks down, the water stops running and that’s what causes the problem.

To test the solenoid coil: Turn off the shower, use a standard multimeter (ohms), place the two probes on the 2 coil terminals. Generally, resistance reading between 3.5-4.0 kilo Ohms means your coil is fine. (Showerdoc, 2024) It is strongly advised to consult plumber unless familiar with the issue at hand).

Why does the water in an electric shower suddenly go so hot?

Most likely, this means that you have an issue with the thermostat or temperature control settings. If the water suddenly goes very hot, it may be because of a faulty component in your shower – such as the dials for controlling the temperature.

Firstly, check if the thermostat is set to the correct temperature. Additionally, you should check that the thermostat controls are in the correct position and that it’s not stuck.

If the issue is not resolved, then you may need to replace components like the thermostat or heating element. In which case we strongly advise to contact a qualified electrician before attempting proceeding with any part replacements or repairs.

The water is lukewarm or not enough power

The reason that the shower water is only reaching lukewarm temperature, or you find there is next to no power is perhaps because of the microswitch. Which may have burnt out inside and not allowing power through to the elements. It could also be the element itself, if one of the elements inside the heating tank has burnt out then the shower will only be working at half power.

If you still find that you’re not having any luck consult your plumber or check, your Mira shower might still be in warranty if so contact Mira customer service. They can send a certified Mira engineer out to assess the issue and fix if applicable.

Showerhead blocked up

Most likely this is caused by limescale (mineral deposits) which can build up. If you don’t remove the build-up, this can result in poor water pressure, and clogged shower head nozzles, leading to a very unsatisfying shower experience.

The good thing is you can remove limescale yourself by using a simple de-scaling product. Apply the product to the affected area and let it sit for a few minutes, then clean up with a brush or a cloth (wear rubber washing-up gloves or similar). Most Mira shower come ready with Clearscale technology to reduce the amount of limescale build up. Mira shower heads often have rub clean nozzles to make it easier to clean.
